Book Five of "The Commander".
Carol Hancock, wife, mother, pillar of the community and faithful member of her church, never expected to contract Transform Sickness. Certainly, she never expected to make that rarest of transformations, the female predator transformation, and become an Arm. Initially captured by the authorities, she escaped and served an apprenticeship under an older Arm, Stacy Keaton. After she graduated from her training, she took the city of Chicago as her territory, and held Chicago until a secretive Major Transform, Wandering Shade, betrayed Carol to the authorities. Carol’s friends rescued her, but only after she fell into juice withdrawal, which greatly damaged her.
Cared for now by Keaton and a male Major Transform by the name of Gilgamesh, Carol must recover her mind, her abilities and her sanity, as well as regain her place as a powerful and influential Major Transform. She will face unexpected dangers, confront new opponents, and gain new friends as she recovers…and more.
(Although this is the fifth book of “The Commander” series, new readers can also begin with this novel, if they wish.)
No Sorrow Like Separation The Commander Book 5 eBook Randall Farmer
So much happens in this installment of the series. Carol has to recover from withdrawal, Hank finally reports on what he learned from the German Arm, Gilgamesh goes on a quest assigned by the senior Crows, and Keaton gains a new student Arm. Those are just a few of the things that take place in a relatively short time. The stakes seem higher because everyone's goals are finally matching up and the main enemy is appearing. While I didn't find the writing in this novel to be as compelling as some of the others, the rapid-fire of events makes this a must-read.The capabilities of the different Major Transforms are also further explored in this book. The audience gets teases of unexplained terms as they relate to these abilities. Terms like mystical, shaman, and witch, all in relation to how the specific transforms interact with and manipulate Juice. We even get a glimpse of a "Freudian" Focus who uses symbolic juice patters to fight her enemies. What does that mean? I'm not even 100% sure and I read the books. Hopefully this all gets explained in the future or the argument that Juice isn't magic will be a lot harder to swallow.

No Sorrow Like Separation The Commander Book 5 eBook Randall Farmer Reviews
What's more, I've decided, while the dateline of the books is peculiar, I believe the characters are well within reality given their "peculiarities".
Like them all very much.
Even the "monsters".
I personally think any publisher who rejected this book series is missing out on a wonderful series. The author basically rewrites history, to an extent. The characters are very well thought out and the story line is great. I usually have to skip over many parts of most books because they get boring to me. This is one of the first series where I didn't have to skip over any of it. I read 6 out of the 7 books in the series in a few weeks. I just bought the 7th since he just released it.
At first I found this series outside my comfort level, however, the writing, the storyline drew me in and I just had to keep reading. For me, it is akin to the Long View by Busby, showing one of the pathways humanity may develop in the future. The absence of personal responsibility, the willingness to turn our lives over to others, the distaste for those that follow a different path all this in characters that you dislike, that you cheer for and that you weep for. It does everything a great series is suppose to, making you, the reader, live in the moment.
This is the second fairly long series that I quit after reading over halfway through...
I didn't review the previous books because I was hoping it wouldn't be so negative and depressing forever.
I finally surpassed my pain threshold, it is just so depressing that even if the writing is good eventually you just hate the experience so much you you give up on hoping it won't be miserable and just have to quit.
If the writing wasn't good I would have given it a 1 star and went back to given the previous stories 1 star also, but some others might like a good story more than me even if it's about a virtual miserable experience so they might enjoy it more than me.
I know a story needs conflict, but frequent murder and torture by the main characters is a bit extreme.
